Hindustan Shipyard Limited foundation stone was laid by DR. Rajendra prasad on 21 June 1941, Founded as the Scindia Shipyard built by Walchand Hirachand
as a part of Scindia Navigation Ltd. Vishakapatnam is selected as a Suitable [place for the shipyard and processed in 1940 November.
The first ship to be constructed was after the independence named as Jal Usha which launched by Jawaharlal Nehru in which the family of Walchand Hirchnd,
Tulsidas Kilchand and late Narottam Morarjee were present along with other industrialists and dignitaries.
All of sudden Walchand Passed away in 1953, and then Hindustan Scindia Shipyard continued to flourish under the kins of founders. However,
later the government of India decided to nationalize the Shipyard,
as it was a strategic and sensitive sector that is related to the defense sector. The ship was finally nationalized in 1961 and
got named Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL).
In 2010, HSL was transferred to the Ministry of Defence from the Ministry of Shipping. The yard played a critical role in the development of Arihant class submarine, nuclear-powered.
