The Himachal Pradesh Forests are recognized for their majesty and grandeur, like a green jewel in the Himalayan crest. These life-supporting methods are directly under high stress due to the influence of economic development, modern culture, and growth in cattle and human populations.
Based on National Forest Policy, in the year 1988, at least two thirds i.e 66 of the geographic region should be below forests in mountainous states like HP (Himachal Pradesh). However, having in view, that approximately 20 percent of the region is far and away from the tree limit, the State Govt proposes to bring Fifty of the geographic area under forest protection.
The Himachal Pradesh Forests have been listed on an ecological basis as set down by Seth & Champion and can be broadly divided into Coniferous Forests and broad-leaved Forests. The combination of different kinds follows a fairly consistent altitudinal layer. Nature varies from Dry Scrub Forests at more moderate elevations to Alpine Pastures at higher elevations. In between these two limits, different vegetational regions of Mixed Bamboo, Deciduous Forests, Oaks, Chil, Kail, Deodar, Fir, and Spruce, are seen.
The Himachal Pradesh Forests are rich in vascular flora, which makes the important vegetation protection. The abundance and variety of our flora can be calculated from the fact that out of the entire 45,000 varieties found in the nation as many as 3,295 species are listed in the Himachal Pradesh State.
