The coalfields company was founded in 1975 after the nationalization of coal mines in India. Eastern Coalfields Limited is a coal producer based in India. It obtained all the private sector coal mines of the Raniganj Coalfield. Eastern Coalfields is one of the fully maintained subsidiaries of Coal India Limited.

The Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) headquarters at Sanctoria, in West Bengal. Coalmining in India first started in the Raniganj Coalfield. In the year 1774, Suetonius Grant Heatly and John Sumner of the British East India Company found coal near Ethora, presently in Salnpur community development block. The early research and mining operations were carried out haphazardly.

During the time of nationalization,  almost wholly in the Raniganj Coalfield, came under the jurisdiction of ECL of about 414 coal mines. These were regrouped to around 123 mines. 21 million tonnes of Production in 1973-74  was found to which 20.744 million tonnes were from underground mines and the rest from manual quarries.  production was declined from 98.49% at the time of nationalization to 18.23% in 2014-15 from the underground mines, The focus is mainly on technological up-gradation of underground mines. In 2014-15, conventional bord and pillar – 0.539, mechanized bord and pillar – 5.335, mechanized longwall (including road header) – 0.025, continuous miner – 1.397, Total – 7.296 is done by the technology-wise production from the underground mines (in million tonnes).

The formation of coal seams in the Raniganj Coalfield-Mugma field of ECL has occurred mainly in Barakar measures and Raniganj measures. The Rajmahal and the Santhal Pargana mines Area are mainly related to Talchair series and  Barakar measuresRegular mining began in 1820, managed by an agency house In 1835, byAlexander & Co. Tagore and Company led the field. Prince Dwarkanath Tagore bought over the collieries and Carr, For the entire 19th century and a major part of the 20th century.
